Be Still

It seems that with all of the distractions between our entertainment and our technology, it’s harder for us to appreciate and even understand the words “be still.” Such a powerful little phrase that many of us don’t have the ability to appreciate. Some of you might be thinking, “be still? You mean, waste time?” No, I don’t. I hesitate to use this phrase, but things as simple as meditating or quiet reflection become so much more meaningful when we take time to remove ourselves from a way of life that seems to only value constant noise and bustle. What is therefore all the more impressive is finding time to contemplate the meaningfulness of small things. How often have you been able to take advantage of the stillness and quiet?

Instantaneous connectivity and access to information is a great thing, to be sure. Within two minutes I was able to change the oil in my lawnmower, all thanks to what I found online. With that connectivity, however, comes the constant barrage of notifications and influences, to a point where, it almost deprives someone of their human experiences. When I take even as few as five minutes to disconnect and listen, I’m amazed at what a humbling experience I’ve had. It’s strange to think, that in this instance, silence does not mean a lack of sound, but rather, a lack of distraction and access to yourself, to not only reflect but appreciate the things in your life that are smothered in the dull roar of tedious distractions and obligations.
