You’re just a phone call away

Life may seem like it was designed to go wrong. Any amount of little things barraging you with their inconveniences and their setbacks can make you feel bad. Maybe you lost your keys or wallet, maybe your tire goes flat, or maybe you get sick at the worst time possible. But nothing, no force on this earth can effectively prepare you for that one phone call that brings you to your knees. Keep in perspective that you could go from sighing over a drained car battery to the tears I cried the day Sheryl called me to tell me her father passed away. Suddenly the crisis of a bouncing credit card pales in comparison to the first significant loss. All the struggles of the daily grind became white noise in the face of such overwhelming sorrow. It’s staggering how little we honestly think about the fact that we are only a phone call away from being lambasted by unmitigated woe.

In such a comparison, the other gazillion things don’t really matter. Life can have all of the left turns and red lights it wants, but nothing can successfully ready you for that inevitable car crash. In the overall scheme of things, the tedious minutia doesn’t matter when it comes time for you to take that phone call, and better or worse, you have to pick it up. So do the only thing you can do, make it a good day and leave yourself no room for regrets.
