Hypocrisy
A hypocrite in true form, is the practice of claiming to have more standards or beliefs to which one’s own behavior does not conform. It’s an interesting thing to think about, because hypocrisy falls under the same umbrella as judging. At some point we’re all guilty of hypocrisy whether we mean to or not. One of the things I find most curious about all of this is how people turn to a church and say “there’s the biggest collection of hypocrites you can find.” Well, that’s simply untrue. You wouldn’t go to a doctor’s office and expect to find the seats full of healthy people. Likewise, you don’t go to a church and expect to find a bunch of angels. The church exists to help us keep our lives in check with God’s standards. Most believers realize that the only true judgment comes from God. Whatever arbitrary assessments we do to each other are moot and sinful, ergo, most Christians are understanding, they come to church with their problems to seek healing and refuge.
Everyone is looking at how people dress, talk, what they do for a living, and any qualifier you think of. Imagine how hard it would be to force everyone to dress how you’d like, talk how you’d like, and do what you’d like. You’ll find most people would rather keep to their own standards and march to their own beat. This is why you’ll always have hypocrites: everyone thinks that their worldview is the only view that matters. Many people think that “Truth” is relative or subjective. When they live their life in a way that others find appalling or inconsistent with their own standards, there’s judgment. Christianity doesn’t have some process where members of a church go out daily to look for sinners and check off a list of faults and failures. Hypocrisy is a vice that everyone is subjected to. People you work with or go to school with may look at you and your work and point out any number of little errors before turning to their own flawed construct. People will be people and as hard as it is to put up with them, you love them in spite of their sins, leaving that to God.
